Moving into a new home is one of life’s most exciting milestones, but it can also feel a little overwhelming. Whether you're downsizing or upgrading to a bigger space, there are some key things to do before, during, and after the move to help you settle in and make your new place feel like home.

This is why I’ve put together some simple, yet effective tips to ensure you’re ready for this new chapter. Enjoy!

BEFORE YOU MOVE

Declutter (Especially If You’re Downsizing)
First things first: if you’re moving into a smaller home, it’s time to clear out things that no longer serve you. Clothes, kitchen items, accessories—if they’re old, worn out, or just not being used, let them go!
Downsizing is the perfect opportunity to simplify and only bring the things that truly matter or spark joy into your new home. Not only will this make packing easier, but you’ll also create a more peaceful space to live in.
Keep What You Love (If You’re Moving to a Bigger Space)
On the flip side, if you’re moving into a bigger home, you may want to keep all your furniture and accessories to help fill those extra rooms. You’ll love the chance to repurpose your current pieces, breathe new life into old favorites, and perhaps even reimagine your style.
This is your chance to rethink how each space can function, whether it’s transforming a guest room into a cozy office or creating a reading nook in that lovely bay window.
Paint, paint, paint!
It’s always a good idea to do a little painting before all your belongings are inside. This way, you can get the walls just the way you want them without the hassle of maneuvering around furniture. A fresh coat of paint can completely transform the feel of a room and make your new place feel fresh and personalized.
For an extra touch, consider adding a feature wall or some bold wallpaper, especially in spaces like a powder room, where you can really have fun with it!

2. DURING THE MOVE

Upgrade Light Fixtures
Think of light fixtures as the jewelry of your home. When you invest in a beautiful chandelier for the dining room or an eye-catching pendant in the entryway, you’re setting the tone for your entire home.
These small changes can make a huge impact in giving your space a wow factor. So, if you can, swap out any outdated or basic fixtures for something that speaks to your personal style.
Start with the Big Pieces
When it comes time to arrange your furniture, start by placing your larger or more meaningful pieces first. Maybe it’s your favorite couch or a console table that always makes you smile. These are the items that should take center stage in your new home. Once those are in place, build the rest of the decor around them. This is the fun part—use this as an opportunity to create a space that feels just right for you!
Don’t Forget the Curtains!
Curtains are a must-have for both privacy and style. They dress up a room, add softness, and help control light levels. Think of this as one of those essential purchases to make before moving in.
A combination of light-filtering shades and heavier drapes will give you versatility for different times of the day, plus a little extra personality. Whether you’re going for a bold print or something more understated, curtains can add a lot of charm and warmth to your new space.

3. AFTER THE MOVE

It’s OK to rethink spaces
Be open to rethinking the use of spaces. After you move in and you start living in your new home, you’ll notice that there might be some rooms or nooks that were intended for a purpose but end up been used in a completely different way! Rethink your spaces, this allows for the home to have a flow and personality that responds to your own unique lifestyle.
Decorate!
Now that the big pieces are in place and you are finding the soul of your new home, you get to focus on the exquisite details and feel of each room. Little by little you get to accessorize and add unique pieces that will complete the look! Decoration goes from adding a gallery wall, to changing a carpet or even applying fun wallpaper in a room. This is how your home evolves and adapts to you and your needs. This is the fun part! Have fun with it :)
